Calea zacatechichi (C. ternifolia) is a shrub that occurs naturally all throughout Central America, especially at high altitudes in Mexico. It is of great importance in traditional medicine. The Aztec dream herb is used not only for dream induction,
as the name implies, but is a well-known remedy for the relief of asthma and tropical dysentery.
It is strongly suggested to smoke rather than to drink as tea, since calea zacatechichi is extremely bitter.
From calea leaves, which are reminiscent of nettle leaves, an effective tea can be prepared, which, however, tastes unpleasantly bitter if it is not mixed with other herbs.
As a means of gaining the ability of lucid dreaming, Aztec shamans used the herb to find answers to questions of secular or religious nature. The healers, after drinking a strong extract of the plant in a darkened room and smoking some leaves, gained the ability to perceive the voices of gods and spirits.
